WORCESTER'S Harvey Shaw shone as Herefordshire and Worcestershire competed at the annual Dave Sunderland County Schools’ Cross Country Trophy for the first time.

Nine counties were involved in Cheshire and the visiting 21 athletes returned with two of the 18 medals available alongside two other top-10 finishers.

Conditions were tough in the wind and rain as Royal Grammar School Worcester pupil Shaw claimed the bronze medal from a field of 130 in the boys' year seven race.

He was followed home by Matt Bevins from Aston Fields Middle, Bromsgrove, in fourth and Will Pridden from Bromsgrove School in 27th.

Lily Saxon from South Bromsgrove High clinched the silver medal in the intermediate girls' age group on the gruelling four-kilometre course.

Natalie Hatfield from Bromsgrove School was eighth out of 100 finishers.

The girls' year seven race saw Lilia Mico from Malvern St James secure the best finish with Amelie Ranger (Alvechurch Middle), Ana Nicholls (Royal Grammar Worcester) and Philippa Taylor (Dodderhill School) also competing.

In the junior girls' race Amelia Hartshorn (Haybridge High, Hagley) and Esme Ranger (South Bromsgrove) finished in the top 20 with Haybridge's Frankie Teague also racing.

The junior boys achieved two top-50 placements from Henry Faizey (Woodrush High, Wythall) and Seb Purvis (Bromsgrove School) with Linus Burnage (The Chase, Malvern), James Thompson (Alvechurch Middle) and Flynn Powell (Woodrush) also involved.

The four intermediate boys finished their 5km race in the top 50 led home by Harrison Mayne (St Augustine’s, Redditch).

Team-mates pushing him were James Rollison (Royal Grammar Worcester), Sam Davey (Christopher Whitehead) and Ben Harle (King's School).
