KIND-hearted residents in Netherton have united to help an elderly man who was robbed of hundreds of pounds.

A man in his eighties, who wishes to remain anonymous, had cash stolen from his hand while he was about to pay his bills last week.

News of the mugging was spread on social media, with people expressing their anger at the crime and a desire to help the man back on his feet after the ordeal.

Thanks to the work of community Facebook page Spotted Netherton, a fundraising campaign was organised, with people from all over the town chipping in to a collection fund for the man.

Organisers Wayne Kemp and Bethany Kemp, who run the page, said they were 'astounded' by the £745 figure raised.

Wayne said: "Someone offered £10 to help the elderly man so we decided to have a collection to get his money back, we knew the people of Netherton would help, we drove round on Tuesday and Wednesday collecting from people.

"The amazing town of Netherton raised a whopping £745 with a card signed by lots of people.

"We would really like to thank all of Netherton."

The man was said to be uninjured in the incident and was said to be shocked but grateful by the support he has received.
