MOTORISTS have been hit with delays after a car caught fire on the M5 near junction 2 at Oldbury.
The incident happened near junction 2, at 9.16am this morning (June 4).
The driver had got out of the car and was not hurt - a passing paramedic had stopped to help, but their assistance wasn't required.
Three fire engines and 15 firefighters attended the scene and put the fire out.
The incident, near the Oldbury Viaduct roadworks, has led to an additional 45 minute delay after emergency services headed to the scene.
There are long delays northbound as a result and drivers have been urged consider alternative routes.
A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service said: "The car set on fire as it was going through roadworks.
"Our crews extinguished the fire and arranged for the vehicle to be recovered from the motorway."
The incident comes after police had already shut down Portway Road in Oldbury as a result of a traffic collision in which an elderly man was injured.
Highways England tweeted that lane two of the M5 was blocked and that firefighters and traffic officers were on their way to the scene.
It later tweeted to say the scene had been cleared, but that there was still a delay of around 45 minutes for frustrated drivers.
All lanes now re-opened #M5 northbound between J2 #Oldbury exit and entry slip - scene is clear. Congestion is still back to #M5 northbound #FrankleyServices. Please consider alternative routes due to extended travel time (approx. 45 mins). Thank you for your patience.
