STOURBRIDGE MP Margot James has quit the government after joining rebels in a move to block the Government forcing through a no-deal Brexit.
Conservative MP Ms James has resigned as minister for digital after voting against the Government along with 16 other Tories who backed an amendment in the House of Commons which could prevent the next Prime Minister from suspending Parliament to allow the UK to crash out of the EU without a deal.
The Commons backed the move by 315 votes to 274 - a majority of 41.
The vote came after the House of Lords passed an amendment last night (Wednesday) by a majority of 103 - to ensure Parliament is able to sit during the weeks leading up to the October 31 Brexit deadline.
Ms James said of her decision to quit: "I wasn’t expecting to resign today.
"I thought I would abstain and resign next week if Boris won.
"It’s very hard to make these decisions. In the end I thought it was worth it.
"I thought it was time Parliament stood up for this and gave a strong message to whoever wins on Tuesday."
She said she only decided to rebel an hour or two before the vote although she had been planning to quit in the event PM hopeful Boris Johnson wins the leadership challenge.
Ms James said: "I felt I would be resigning on Tuesday if he won so it was only a few days in advance.
"I couldn’t serve under Boris but I would serve under Jeremy Hunt."
