MANAGER Ashley Vincent wants reserve-team goal machine Aaron Brett to be “professional” in his pursuit of a first-team chance at Worcester City.

The 19-year-old is the subject of an approach from Pershore Town after topping the Midland Football League (MFL) Division Four/Reserve score charts with 15 goals from five starts and one substitute appearance in all competitions.

Those net-busting exploits have also prompted fans to call for him to be given a shot with City's senior side.

Brett’s tally includes two as the second string won 4-2 at Fairfield Villa reserves in the MFL Challenge Trophy on Saturday, a fixture that was played while City filled five of seven available places on the bench for an FA Vase tie at Pinchbeck United.

Vincent explained that Brett, affectionately known as Bam Bam at the club, would have been part of that squad had he taken part in training where his presence has been rare to date.

“I invited Bam Bam down for pre-season and spoke to Snapper (previous manager John Snape) about him last season, he had injuries and we were trying to get him up and running,” said Vincent.

“We know what he can do. I have seen it myself in glimpses, he wants to get shots away and score goals and has been in a squad this season.

“What I would say is he hasn’t been training, I think I have seen him three times from the start of pre-season and we train where the reserves and under-21s do.

“He would have trained with us (the first team) and I have given him the opportunity to work with our physio but he hasn’t been there.

“I know he has been playing for the reserves on occasion and that he scored two in each of the past two weekends but before that he had been out for four weeks because he twisted his ankle playing with his mates, something lads of that age tend to want to do.

“He hasn’t really been around for me to consider. I know he scored two on the Saturday (prior to Pinchbeck) but was not at training on Thursday.

“With Jordan Harrison dropping out and the game being as it was he would probably have got minutes and a chance to get up and running.

“He is absolutely on our radar, he is a young lad who wants to play football but he also has to accept there is a professional way to go about it. You must be at training and keep staff informed of what is going on elsewhere.

“He is a really top kid who probably needs some guidance and he has been offered that by me. Ultimately it will be his choice whether he wants to fight to show Worcester City what he has got or whether he feels he needs to go elsewhere to get minutes.”

Asked whether moving on would hamper Brett’s chances, Vincent replied: “He would naturally go down the pecking order because he would be out of the building.

“If he had trained on Thursday he would have been on the bench but if he goes elsewhere that becomes more difficult because he wouldn’t be training with us.

“Whatever happens we will keep an eye on him and if he does well he will be considered like any other player signed to Worcester City.

“Doors never get shut in football, it would be ludicrous to do that, but I would prefer him to stay within the set up and he knows that.

“I would want him around and training regularly with us. The flip side of this is how do I tell one of my boys who trains on a Monday and Thursday that they’re not involved and then put in a 19-year-old boy who doesn’t come training?

“We want to do things the right way but the door will always be open for Bam Bam, he is a special kid with a special talent and a really lovely lad on top. We only want the best for him but he will decide what that is.”
