MANAGER Ashley Vincent conceded Worcester City “got exactly what they deserved” after crashing out of the Worcestershire FA Senior Cup on penalties to 10-man Malvern Town.

City are one level higher than Malvern, played 23 minutes with a man advantage and came up against a defender in goal for the entire second half.

But Harry Wickett, who replaced the injured Charlie Weaver in between the sticks, left City red faced as he saved Marco Adaggio’s penalty to secure Town a 5-4 shootout win.

Worcester scored five goals in normal time with Jordan Harrison and Aaron Brett bagging braces and Luke English scoring a late equaliser.

But Vincent felt City were “like a sieve” at the back as Matt Turner notched four and Curtis Smith grabbed the other for Malvern in an epic second-round tie at The Community Stadium in Pershore.

“I’m very disappointed,” Vincent said.

“Obviously I had a lot of young players out there and they didn’t do themselves justice.

“They didn’t pass the ball and got exactly what they deserved to be honest with you.

“Malvern got what they deserved too.”

City made several changes to his side with Gabriel Bajrami, Jamie Smith, Nyeko Sinclair, Joel Caines, Josh Willis, Harrison and Brett handed starts.

“We changed the formation, playing three at the back and thought we would look at something different with a 4-3-3 as an attacking option but we were like a sieve,” Vincent said.

“Every time Malvern went forward they cut through us and individually we didn’t stand up defensively. We were poor.

“It was basic one v one defending, something that they do day in, day out.

“I am stuck for words because they didn’t do their individual jobs and win their individual battles.”

Weaver suffered a blow to his shoulder just before the interval and with no goalkeeper on the bench Wickett took the gloves.

Asked whether he was boosted by Weaver’s injury, Vincent said: “No because I didn’t think we were playing very well.

“In the last third we scored four goals from four chances, so it wasn’t like we were peppering their goal.

“When they didn’t have a keeper, we didn’t think let’s get the ball forward in good areas and get shots on goal.

“I thought they looked dangerous all night and we didn’t cope with that. We didn’t show the energy and tempo that I asked for.”

Liam Lockett, Brett, English and Demetri Brown were successful from the spot before Adaggio’s effort was palmed away by Wickett.

On the shootout, Vincent added: “It’s a lottery and to be fair to them their five penalties were fantastic as they were all put into good areas.

“Adaggio is experienced enough and has picked his spot but the lad has gone the right way and saved it.

“I am not going into that though as we were 11 v 10 and we didn’t do the things we should have been doing and we weren’t proactive in the way we wanted to play.”
