THE derelict Longlands School in Stourbridge suffered more damage when a large fire broke out on Wednesday.

Firefighters were deployed to the scene in Brook Street to tackle the flames whch sent smoke billowing into the sky and left the road blocked for hours.

The derelict former school and college building has been a haven for vandalism since it was mothballed in 2011.

Persimmon Homes won planning approval in July 2019 to build 52 homes on the site and work was due to get underway towards the end of last year.

The site, however, has remained overgrown and delapidated and youths have continued to tresspass on the site.

A resident in Brook Street said a group of young people were seen entering the site at around 4pm before the fire broke out sometime after 6pm.

She said she has repeatedly reported incidents at the site to the town's MP, the council and Persimmon Homes.

Another resident, whose property is close to the old school, said the site has been a nuisance for the last few years.
