A QUIZ show contestant from Belbroughton has told of his disappointment at guessing the wrong answer on last night's Who Wants to be a Millionaire.

Gary Foster managed to get into the hot seat on the popular quiz show hosted by Jeremy Clarkson but the experience was "bittersweet" - he told the News.

The 55-year-old, who works for garden company GreenThumb in Nash Lane, had successfully made his way to the £16,000 question when it all went wrong.

After taking a gamble, he ended up walking away with just £1,000 - losing £7,000 when he guessed the answer to a question asking which Steven Spielberg film was released in the same year as Schindler's List.

Stourbridge News:

Mr Foster, who says he has been a fan of the show since it first appeared on TV screens, plumped for Hook instead of the correct answer - Jurassic Park - after using up his Ask the Audience and 50-50 lifelines.

He said: "The minute that question came up I knew I was done, I knew I'd have to guess. It was a really difficult question. I had seen Schindler's List in the cinema but I couldn't for the life of me remember what year it was."

Not entirely a stranger to appearing on quiz shows, Mr Foster was a unlucky contestant on Who Dares Wins with Nick Knowles a few years ago.

But he had wanted to put in an appearance on Who Wants to be a Millionaire for many years - having watched the show since its earliest days when it was hosted by Chris Tarrant.

It was every bit as nerve-wracking as you would imagine, he said, adding: "You don't really think you're ever going to get on."

He said despite the nerves, he felt comfortable in the hot seat and it was a "great experience".

Mr Foster, who applied to go on the show after moving back to the UK after living in Australia for two years, was left "very disappointed" at how things turned out - having successfully navigated his way past the £8,000 question - but he stressed: "It was about the challenge, not the money."

He said his wife Caroline watched on as an audience member in the studio when the show was filmed in Manchester towards the end of last year and she watched the show, the first episode of the new season, when it aired on Monday. But he couldn't bring himself to tune in.

Who Wants to be a Millionaire is running every night this week at 9pm on ITV.
