A FORMER Worcester Warriors rugby player has completed his epic swim of the English Channel, raising vital funds for children and their families suffering serious medical conditions.

Alex Grove arrived in France on Thursday afternoon (August 6) after a gruelling 13 hour and 57 minute swim from Dover.

Beginning at just after midnight, he was swimming later than he expected after he had to rearrange the swim due to poor weather.

Arriving in France, Mr Grove tweeted: “Just touched down in France. 13 hours 57mins. Unbelievable shift. That was different level.”

More than £27,000 was raised in the swim, and the money will go towards helping Acorns Childrens Hospice support children and their families battling serious medical conditions.

Mel Hall, area fundraiser for Acorns, said: “We are in awe of what Alex has achieved today.

"His hard work and determination over the last 12 months, in the face of some very unexpected challenges, has been truly inspiring.

"Words can’t express how grateful we are to Alex for raising such a phenomenal amount and for shining the spotlight on our vital care services.

"This money will help children and families continue to get the crucial support they need. On behalf of everyone at Acorns, a huge thank you to Alex and his team. We hope he enjoys a well-earned rest.”

Mr Grove was due to begin his swim last weekend, but had to postpone until this week after poor weather off Dover meant he could not get started.

The former Scotland international first became connected with Acorns during his playing days at Sixways, visiting the hospice regularly as part of his community work.

Since then, he has stayed involved, helping on regular occasions.
