DELIVERY drivers on mopeds and bikes are putting vulnerable residents at risk in a city area, it has been claimed.

Deliveroo and Papa John’s delivery drivers are riding mopeds and bikes on the footpath to avoid the traffic, according to residents of Cripplegate House in St John’s.

A man who wished to remain anonymous said: “I was sitting on the wall just by the three big rocks where pedestrians walk through on the frontage of Cripplegate House, when all of a sudden one of Papa John’s delivery drivers came riding through on a moped without a care for anyone, forcing a couple with two young children to step onto the grass.

“Another young man went and told them off.”

We reported previously how city councillor Richard Udall had raised concerns and a spokesman for the pizza chain said it would “work to address the issues.”

The statement previously given said: "We are grateful to Cllr Udall for drawing our attention to this situation. We are looking into the situation in Cllr Udall’s ward and will work with him to address any issues.”

However, Cllr Udall says it is still an ongoing problem.

The St John’s councillor said: “It is still happening. I have received several phone calls from worried residents about both Papa John’s and Deliveroo delivery drivers using the footpath in St Clements Close to avoid the traffic.

“The residents in the high rises have issues including reduced mobility, sight problems, learning difficulties and disabilities – it is not fair for them to have to dodge out of the way of speeding bikes on the public footpath.

“Residents are reporting feeling scared and intimidated.

“I have reported the problem to the police and they have told me they will be doing surveillance in the area in unmarked vehicles to catch them in the act.

“I understand the frustrations of the delivery drivers, getting around St John’s is extremely difficult at the moment due to the roadworks, however, that is no excuse for this kind of behaviour.

“Residents should feel safe when walking on public footpaths.”

Both Deliveroo and Papa John's have said they will look in to the matter immediately.

A spokesperson for Deliveroo said: "Deliveroo takes rider conduct extremely seriously and provides regular safety training, to ensure riders follow the rules of the road and meet our high safety standards at all times. We are urgently looking into this incident."

A spokesperson for Papa John's added: "Papa John’s requires all delivery drivers to follow the rules of the road and obey local traffic regulations. We are looking into this as a matter of urgency."
