A CASE of coronavirus has been confirmed at The Wordsley School just a week after children returned to the classroom.

The secondary school in Brierley Hill Road is one of a number across the UK to have reported a positive case since pupils were allowed to return to school.

Public Health England and Dudley Council have been informed about the case and parents have reportedly been told they will be contacted if their child has come into contact with the infected student.

Councillor Ruth Buttery, Dudley Council's cabinet member for children and young people, said: “Due to patient confidentiality, we cannot comment on individual cases but parents and carers can be assured their schools will contact them should they need to take any action."

She said the council has been working closely with borough schools and education providers and she added: "As schools reopen for the autumn, we know there might be Covid-19 cases but we will continue to do all we can to keep children and young people safely back in school where they belong.

“People can also continue to help reduce the risk of transmission by following government guidance, including social distancing and practising good hand hygiene. It is vital that anyone who is symptomatic self-isolates and seeks a test."
