SANDWELL Council leader Maria Crompton and a senior colleague are reportedly under investigation by Labour bosses in the latest controversy to hit the group.

It is understood interim leader Councillor Crompton, who represents Tividale, and Abbey ward member Bob Piper will be investigated, although the grounds have not been disclosed.

West Midlands Labour Party has been contacted for comment on these developments.

This is yet another blow to the local party following reports earlier this week that Councillor Joanne Hadley has been suspended by the party, pending an inquiry into allegations of racism, relating to comments made in recorded telephone calls.

It is thought that she and another councillor have been suspended while two other members are under investigation.

Councillor Hadley will remain in her role as cabinet member for safer communities while the inquiry takes place.

She was unable to comment on this when approached but has previously stated the recordings were stolen.

Councillor Hadley told the LDRS in August: “I believe the contents of the recording has been tampered with to show me in a bad light and I have reported the matter to the police.”

A Labour Party spokesperson said: “The Labour Party takes all complaints of racism extremely seriously and they are fully investigated in line with our rules and procedures, and any appropriate disciplinary action is taken.”
