Stourbridge News: Roger Willetts at a recent family event and as captain in the 1960sRoger Willetts at a recent family event and as captain in the 1960s Stourbridge Rugby Club has been mourning the loss of stalwart and honourary life member Roger Willetts.

Mr Willetts, 85, died on December 27 and his funeral took place recently at Wyre Forest Crematorium.

He leaves daughters Jayne and Julie after his wife, Joan, died in 2016.

A tribute on the club’s website describes how Mr Willetts played in the inaugural game at Stourton in 1965 against Moseley.

“Along with nine others he exceeded 300 1st XV caps in the pre-league era.

“He captained the club in the seasons 60/61 and 61/62 and represented Worcester and Hereford.

“He was part of a formidable second row combination with Dickie Davies, was the Club goal kicker and was top points scorer for five seasons including his debut year of 1956/1957.

“Roger attended King Edward VI Grammar school in Stourbridge and it was through school that he was first introduced to the game of rugby.”

The website’s picture shows him captaining the team in 1960/1961 at the old ground in Vicarage Road, Wollaston, and more recently in 2018 at a family party.

He sponsored guide dog puppies and his nominated charity was Guide Dogs for the Blind. A tribute fund page for donations and messages can be seen at https://roger-willetts.muchloved.com/
