The pollution created by learner drivers failing their tests in Dudley is among the worst in the country.

The driving test centre is the 7th worst nationally when it comes to cars used during failed tests pumping Carbon Dioxide (CO2) into the air.

The good news is that Covid has brought pollution plummeting by 77% – because tests are being cancelled.

Now a petition with over 56,000 signatures from learners is calling for alternative ways to pass the test, avoiding the test centre and potentially reducing CO2 emissions.

Analysis by the SaveonEnergey.com/uk found that since April 2019 failed driving tests pumped more than 2million kilogrammes of CO2 into the atmosphere – the equivalent of 449 return flights from London to Melbourne.

Highest polluting test centre was Norris Green in Liverpool, producing just over 20,000 kg of CO2 – equivalent to 50 flights from Liverpool to Athens.

Dudley comes 7th worst in the country, with just under 16,000 kgs of CO2. That’s about the same as 68 one-way flights to Ibiza in Spain.

The bad news is that the West Midlands has several other of the most polluting centres.

Garretts Green and Kingstanding in Birmingham come in second and third, while South Yardley in the city was 10th and Wolverhampton came in 12th.

In Dudley there were 6,889 failed tests from April 2019 until July 2020.
