PRIME Minister Boris Johnson's visit to Stourbridge the day before polling day didn't go down well with everyone.

The PM made a whistle stop visit to the town yesterday (Wednesday May 5) and was pictured cycling along the Stourbridge Canal with Andy Street (who hopes to hang onto his Mayoral seat) on one of the newly installed so-called 'Boris Bikes'.

He also called in at Stourbridge Football Club at Amblecote and the club later tweeted pictures of the visit - showing Mr Johnson in the clubhouse and with local Tories giving the thumbs up.

The image and message tweeted out by the club, however, sparked anger from football fans on Twitter - with one saying they'd ripped up their season ticket in protest at the pre-election day publicity stunt.

The club had tweeted: "We would like to thank @BorisJohnson for popping into see us today on his tour around the country for the local elections, it was a privilege to meet the prime minister and great to see him in Stourbridge and at the War Memorial Ground.

"We would also like thank @Q66Suzi @andy4wm and everyone else for coming in to see us today whilst out promoting tomorrow’s elections. Good luck to everyone."

But fans quickly responded with anger - saying they didn't feel it was right for the club to give the impression of allegiance to one particular political party so close to the polls opening today (Thursday May 6).

One Twitter user commented: "I don't think they were promoting the elections? Weren't they promoting the Tory toff party? Does the football club align with them then? Or was this just a careless tweet?"

Another said: “Good luck” to the Conservative Party. Embarrassing this. There are local elections tomorrow. The club should not be promoting a party. It’s as simple as that."

Someone else posted: "Looks like you've nailed your colours to the mast and it's not Stourbridge red."

And another added: "Really disappointed in you Stour, for promoting one particular party on the day before the local elections."

And they kept on coming, with another social media user saying: "Probably the best thing to do now is relegate the club immediately. Shameful lack of awareness from the club."

Another said: "Shame on you. Watched my first Glassboys game in the early 70s but won't be back anytime soon."

While another commenter said: "I've ripped my season ticket up."

There were a few less scathing comments thrown in among the vitriolic posts, however, with one Twitter user pointing out: "He is the prime minister, no matter what your views are - that is a fact. The people in this country voted for him."

The club has been contacted with a request for comment on the matter.
