CAT fans and commuters are being asked to help Stourbridge Junction and its famous feline George the cat to win a national Twitter competition running today (Friday October 15).

George's loyal following on the social media platform has put the station in pole position to win the World Cup of Stations this time round, having missed out by a cat's whisker last year despite a fierce battle online to grab votes.

The Stourbridge team have already notched up a good lead after being narrowly pipped to the post by Glasgow Queen Street which gained just 0.3 per cent more of the vote last time.

But the Glaswegians are again hot on the tail of George and the team today - with finalists Glasgow Central wracking up the votes in the final hours of the rail industry's annual celebration of UK train stations.

Commuters and members of the public are therefore urged not to 'paws' and to cast their vote for Stourbridge Junction, operated by West Midlands Railway, on the Rail Delivery Group's Twitter channel @RaileliveryGrp.

People can also keep up with the competition by following the hashtag #WorldCupOfStations.

On his Twitter account @TheStourbridge, George said: "If we are fortunate enough to win we have had lots of very kind people say that they will donate to their local animal shelters - which is truly amazing."

Aviemore station, in the Scottish Highlands, and St Ives railway station in Cornwall are also in the final.
