Stourbridge MP Suzanne Webb, pictured, said her "thoughts and prayers are with Sir David’s family" and she added: "This is a terrible tragedy and it has happened to such a kind man going about his job as a public servant. There are no words I can adequately use to explain how upset I am at this news."

James Morris MP said he was "devastated" to hear the news and he described Sir David as "a very popular colleague to work with" - adding: "My thoughts are with his family and those who knew him at this terrible time.

"Sir David was doing what he did best, representing the people of Southend West. It is appalling that he was attacked like this going about his business representing his constituents."

Dudley South MP Mike Wood said he and Sir David had worked together on a number of issues and he described him as "decent, nice and likeable" and he said: "I don't think there was anyone who didn't like him, I don't think I've ever heard any bad words about him."

He added: "It's shocking that he went to work this morning genuinely trying to help his constutuents and this has happened."

But he stressed: "We've just got to carry on and not let some sick individual stop us from doing what we can to help our constituents."
