WORK to transform a former brownfield site on the edge of Stourbridge into a new housing estate with 256 new homes is set to start in 2022.

Dudley's planning committee approved detailed plans for Old Wharf Road at last Thursday's meeting (November 17) after housebuilder Taylor Wimpey won outline planning approval 12 months ago to develop the former industrial site, off Amblecote High Street, into a new waterside housing estate.

The scheme will comprise 10 one-bedroom flats, 41 two-bedroom flats, 10 two-bedroom homes, 98 three-bedroom properties and 97 four-bedroom homes.

A spokesperson for Taylor Wimpey said: “We are absolutely delighted that our plans to bring forward a brand new community in Stourbridge have been approved by Dudley Council.

"The site will deliver 256 new homes and apartments, including the renovation of the Suttons Holloware building located on site.

“We would like to thank local residents and councillors for their comments during the public consultation period and planning application stage which helped to shape our proposals.

"We are very much looking forward to starting on site in early 2022.”

All old factory buildings previously on site have now been demolished, the foundations removed and the land prepared for development.

Amblecote councillor Pete Lee said he was "impressed" with the plans for the site.

He told the News: "I'm very impressed with the layout and materials they're going to use which will be sympathetic to surrounding properties.

"It's very in keeping with The Bonded Warehouse - that's what I like."

He said he understands some of the apartments will have canal-facing balconies and there will be a lake/pool within the development to help drain any water from the site as the nearby canal and river have flooded during torrential rain outbursts in the past.

Cllr Lee said concerns had been raised about the impact the development will have on schools and the local GP surgery and he added: "The only thing I question is the level of traffic we're going to get on the A491...it's already a menace, but what can you do?

"Apart from that, I'm all in favour of it."
