A WOMAN in her 60s has died after a horror crash on the M5 in Worcestershire this afternoon (Monday).

The crash, involving two vans and a lorry, happened just before 1.30pm between junctions 5 (Wychbold) and 6 (Worcester).

West Midlands Ambulance Service was called at 1.26pm and sent two ambulances, a paramedic officer, and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Strensham to the scene.

Despite the best efforts of medics who rushed to the scene, however, the driver of one of the vans passed away.

A spokesperson for the ambulance service said: “Crews arrived at the scene to find the driver of the car in a critical condition after coming into collision with an HGV.

“Crews worked quickly to administer advanced trauma care to the woman.

"But sadly, despite their best efforts, nothing could be done to save her, and she was confirmed deceased on scene.”

The tragedy saw the motorway closed between junctions 5 and 6 southbound while emergency crews worked at the scene and severe traffic delays continued at rush hour between Bromsgrove, Droitwich and Worcester, with queues reported on A38, A449 Blackpole/Claines, A4538 Pershore Lane, Warndon and other roads east of Worcester.

Superintendent Stuart Bill, of West Mercia Police, said: “The road is currently closed and is likely to remain so well in to the evening while the scene is cleared and investigations take place. There are currently long delays on the M5 as well as on surrounding local routes.

“We are working closely with colleagues from the ambulance service, fire service and National Highways to manage the congestion.

“We ask that motorists bear with us and are patient as we manage the incident and work to re-open the road.  In the meantime, we ask that you please avoid the area and find alternative routes where possible.”
