A STREET party hosted by the Beech Tree Institute in Wollescote is among a raft of celebrations taking place today (Friday June 3) to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
The Institute, also known as the Miners and Wollescote Community Association, is hosting an event in Wassell Road, Wollescote, from midday until around 4pm today.
The day will include a fancy dress competition for children, a real party in the street for little ones, Jubilee cake competition, high tea for the older folk with bingo, 'squid' games, bouncy castles, dance performances; open mic and more – and the fun is set to continue at the Miners later with a live band and games for children.
Councillor Tim Crumpton said: "This is not our first Jubilee.
"We organised a similar event 10 years ago to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee and it is still seen as the best thing to happen in the area for decades.
"We want this party to be amazing."
He added: “Last time we had hundreds turn up and hope this happens again. All are welcome."
A street party is also taking place on The Queensway today (Friday) and a fun activity weekend will take place at The Laurels, Cradley, today (Friday June 3) and Saturday June 4.
The Mayor of Dudley, Councillor Sue Greenaway, will open the event at 2pm today (Friday).
There’ll be fairground rides, a hog roast, Bhangra dancing and performances by Stourbridge Dance Academy and the Cradley Grand Open Sumo Wrestling Competition, with the fun taking place from 2pm to 6pm both days.
On Saturday evening there’ll be a performance by Jerry and The Hat-Tricks and, as part of the celebrations, there’ll be an additional performance by a Gary Barlow tribute act on the Sunday afternoon (June 5).
Meanwhile, Christ Church in Lye High Street will host a Platinum Jubilee Big Lunch community picnic on Sunday June 5.
There'll also be a picnic in the park in Quarry Bank on Sunday June 5, hosted by Christ Church Quarry Bank, with music from the church choir and Black Country Brass. People can take along their own picnic and are invited to gather at the bandstand from 1pm.
