AMBLECOTE councillors have told of their disappointment at having to cancel their winter wonderland Christmas fun day due to high winds.

The three ward councillors for Amblecote - Kamran Razzaq, Paul Bradley and Pete Lee (Dudley’s Deputy Mayor) – had organised the event which was due to take place on Withymoor Playing Fields until 6pm today (Saturday December 9).

But as gusts blew in, after the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for strong winds brought by Storm Elin, they took the decision to cancel.

Cllr Razzaq had said ahead of the event that it would go ahead “whatever the weather” but he told the News today: “Unfortunately due to the high winds we had to cancel the event.

“It was very disappointing but the safety of all present was a priority.

“The winds where too strong, we did not expect stalls to start blowing over.”

The event had been due to feature market stalls, food vans, a bar, Santa’s grotto and an appearance by popular Christmas character Grinch.

Cllr Razzaq said it was looking unlikely that the event could be rescheduled but he added: “We may find an indoor location to do a grotto for the kids.”

Any updates will be posted on the councillors’ Facebook page.
