MORE than 650 people have signed a letter calling for increased safety measures at the busy Oldswinford Cross junction.

An open letter, penned by local parents Councillor Andrew Tromans., Paul Hebron, Matt Broad and Sarah Marley, calls for increased pedestrian safety measures at the junction and adjoining roads.

In their letter - the campaigning parents have called for the pavement closest to The Cross pub on Hagley Road to be widened, extra protection for pedestrians at all four crossings and for an extra sequence to be added to the traffic lights to give pedestrians more time to cross.

They’ve also called for appropriate traffic calming measures on Heath Lane and Glass House Hill.

Cllr Andrew Tromans, who represents Wollaston and Stourbridge Town, said the letter has now been formally handed into Dudley Council and that he hopes to discuss the issues with Dudley Council’s cabinet member for highways and the environment soon.

He said: “I am very grateful to Paul, Matt and Sarah who co-wrote the open letter, Oldswinford Primary School and Oldswinford Hospital School who shared the letter with their school communities and to each and every person who took the time to sign the letter.

“I look forward to working with council officers, fellow elected representatives and the local community to see words become action. I will continue to campaign for pedestrian safety and traffic calming measures on Oldswinford Cross and the nearby roads.”

Councillor Cllr Damien Corfield, the council’s cabinet member of highways and environment, told the News in February that “upgrading Oldswinford Cross to provide a pedestrian phase is on the current pedestrian facilities programme”.

He said a design was being drawn up with the intention to bring this to fruition in the next financial year – subject to budget availability and consultation with the public and local councillors.
