Over £2,000 has been raised from a walking challenge in support of a community member battling cancer.

On Saturday, March 30, the Marina Marchers, a team made up of community members and businesses from Kingswinford, raised the funds by taking part in the Walk of Light event, organised by Blood Cancer UK, at Cannon Hill Park in Birmingham.

The team were walking in support of their friend and community hero, Marina Cotter Parry, who has been battling blood cancer.

Ms Cotter Parry, a recipient of the Saleem Foundation Award For Heroes, heroically fought through the pain to take part in the five kilometre challenge.

The 20-person strong team included community champion Shaz Saleem, TSF Award For Heroes winner Kerry Cooper, Sally-Ann Stanford from Woodbridge Inn and Karla Hale from Daisy Chain.

Mr Saleem said: "Its amazing seeing so many community members and businesses come together to support Marina.

"Marina has done so much for the community by supporting local businesses and has sponsored local events such as the Kingswinford Light Switch on.

"She is a true hero and we are so proud of her.”

Ms Cooper said: "Marina is a true inspiration, to complete the walk is a huge achievement, it was very emotional at the finish.

"We thank everyone who have supported us raise such an incredible amount."

Since 1960 Blood Cancer UK has invested over £500 million in research of the diseasing, helping develop treatments and save lives in the process.
