THE family of a stalwart community photographer who captured “generations of memories” for Stourbridge residents have paid tribute to him after his passing.

Christopher Hall, the man behind Hal Photography, which stood proudly in the town centre for many years, has died aged 89.

Having taken over the business from his father Hal, Chris captured “so many families’ key moments”, including snapping hundreds of weddings over the years.

His daughter, Mandy Hall, paid tribute to him, saying he will be “greatly missed by all his family and friends”.

She said: “He loved his job, and he loved being able to provide special memories to people.

“I have memories of going into the dark room in the shop where the photos would be developed.

“He captured hundreds and hundreds of special moments.”

As well as his work, Chris was a keen member of the operatic society with his wife, Margaret Hall, better known to the community as Betty Cooper and was herself a popular, well-loved figure in the town.

He loved travelling, music, and even performed at weddings, as well as photographing them, Mandy said.

Chris also volunteered as an actor, dressing up in period costumes at the Black Country Living Museum.

Hal Photography was a landmark store in Stourbridge, starting in Market Street before relocating to Lower High Street to make way for The Ryemarket Shopping Centre.

As well as photography, the shop also stocked many models, including Hornby Railway kits.

Chris passed away following complications of heart failure on October 29 and leaves behind Mandy and her brother, Robin.

A service will be held at Stourbridge Crematorium on November 24 at 2.10pm, with the community welcome to attend.
