With the solar eclipse this week, here is how you can watch the once in a generation event safely without special eclipse glasses.
Directly viewing the sun without eclipse glasses can lead to lasting eye damage, so with many retailers not stocking the ISO 12312-2 safety standard glasses some of us will have to find ingenious work arounds to enjoy the event safely.
Even unfiltered cameras, binoculars or a telescope can cause significant damage.
The first way will feel second nature to most of us, simply take out your phone, turn your back to the sun and equip the selfie camera.
This way you will be able view the eclipse safely on your phone screen, with your eyes away from the sun.
You will be in it too, so you can send to all your friends.
The next way is a bit more old fashioned, using your kitchen colander to once again indirectly get a view of the eclipse.
The colander offers a unique but safe alternative, but this time not for your pasta! (Image: Unsplash)
To see the effect, stand with your back to the sun and hold the colander above the ground. Sunlight passing through the holes will create a grid of tiny crescent-shaped images of the sun on the surface beneath.
The final method involves making your own DIY projector with two sheets of paper.
Poke a small, clean hole in a piece of paper, stand with your back to the sun and hold the paper up, allowing sunlight to pass through the hole onto a second sheet of paper held underneath. A miniature crescent image of the eclipse will appear on the bottom sheet
Remember never look directly at the sun with the naked eye as it can cause serious eye damage.
