CALLS have been made for "tatty" and "bedraggled" flags which were installed earlier this year to be taken down from Stourbridge ring road.

Around 60 flags were put up on lamp posts around the ring road back in March as part of a project developed with local artist Luke Perry and students from King Edward VI College.

Over six weeks, young people aged 16–19 worked on the 'Hearts of Stourbridge' project to design and create a series of vibrant flags celebrating the identity, creativity and voices of the town's young people.

They all feature positive messages including 'Bostin,' 'Bee Kind' and 'Love where you live' displayed as part of a public artwork, funded by Arts Council England.

Dudley Council granted permission for the flags to stay in place for one month only - but they are still up and people have complained that they are "tatty, bedraggled, and undiscernable."

Cllr Andrew Southall said he had been contacted by a resident about the issue and added that it was "probably my favourite casework piece yet."

He said someone had contacted him saying 'When are the woke flags attached to lamp posts around Stourbridge ring road being taken down?

These were only supposed to be up for a limited time and are now tatty, bedraggled, and undiscernable.'

Cllr Southall said: "These eyesores must now come down."

One person commented saying: "What even are they?

"Can't even make out what they are. They look horrendous."

Dudley Council said it is liaising with the college to get the flags removed over the coming weeks.

Councillor Simon Phipps, cabinet member for economy and infrastructure, said: "Temporary permission was granted for the installation of the flags as part of a college project earlier this year, but they have not removed the flags as initially agreed.

"We are in contact with the college and the flags will be removed over the coming weeks."

King Edward VI College has been contacted for comment.
