A STOURBRIDGE cyclist is going south over the holiday period to complete a charity challenge of more than 1,000 miles.

Brian Flatley, aged 48, who is a member of the Stourbugs cycling club, is riding from John O’Groats to Land’s End to raise cash for Cancer Research UK.

Life-long biking fan Brian and fellow rider Simon James set off on Good Friday and plan to cover the 1,051 mile route in ten days.

Cancer Research UK is a charity close to Brian’s heart, his father has recently been treated for lymphatic cancer and previously for prostate cancer.

He has been training for the epic adventure for four months and gruelling preparations included riding the 210 miles from Stourbridge to the Welsh coastal town of Tywyn and back in one weekend.

Fellow Stourbug rider Simon James is taking on the challenge to prove he is well on the road to recovery after a brush with death when he suffered a stroke in 2006.

Simon, who is in his mid-50s, made an amazing recovery after being in a coma for three months following the stroke.

Last October he celebrated clocking up 10,000 miles on his bike in eight months after returning to cycling to regain his fitness.
