SANDWELL town hall has been hit by its second major political scandal in 18 months after reports the leader of the council’s Labour party membership has been suspended.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service understands Cllr Yvonne Davies has been suspended as party officials investigate claims she re-tweeted anti-Semitic posts.

Cllr Davies refused to clarify her membership when contacted this morning (Wednesday). She said she would be issuing a formal statement later today.

The claims of her suspension were leaked by multiple sources who wished to remain anonymous.

Under Labour party rules, suspension would require her to resign from her position as head of the authority.

Only 18 months ago the former leader of the council, Steve Eling, was also suspended from Labour’s ranks forcing him to step down.

His departure led to a long-running internal political fight which eventually resulted in Cllr Davies being elected as council leader in May last year.

The timing has sparked anger among party members who said they only learned of the news after an internal meeting of Labour councillors, held last night.

If Cllr Davies is required to resign, her deputy Marie Crompton would be expected to replace her as leader of the authority.
