According to De Beers which said global supplies were running out.
The firm said it would be cutting production to extend the life of its mines.
Analysts believe this measure could see diamond prices rise by least 5% a year for the next five years.
Two years ago De Beers produced 48 million carats.
Production will be cut to 40 million in 2011.
