THE first ever Hagley Stag Run is hoping to raise enough funds to help build a new headquarters for the local Scout group.

Organised by Hagley Rambler Scouts, the event has options for participants to run either a 5k or 10k course around the estate’s grounds, and will start at 10.45am on Sunday, May 14, for a warm up, before the race officially sets off at 11am.

The course will take runners through the woodland – once a medieval deer park – that features ancient trees, drifts of bluebells and watercourses, which have been sympathetically intertwined with the Georgian landscape creating a true national heritage asset.

A Viking re-enactment group will also be setting up a living history encampment and holding a ferocious battle at 2pm, following the stag run.

Stourbridge News:

Alison Akers, one of the event organisers, said: “A stag represents stamina, strength and self-reliance – all qualities which make a great runner.

“If you've never run before why not make this your first run? You can run at any pace and there is no pressure as it's not a timed race.

“The ups and downs of the woodland terrain will really put your stamina to the test, so make you sure you warm up well and drink plenty of fluids.”

Aimed to be a fun event, the run will see prizes awarded for the participants who come in first, second and third place, but everyone who completes the course will receive a goody bag.

The park will remain open until 3pm for an optional 'ramble' for those who fancy a quick stroll around the course, while there will be plenty of refreshments for runners and supporters to enjoy before and after the run.

Organisers hope the event will raise enough money to help finance the new home of the Hagley Beaver, Cubs and Scout units, which are open to both girls and boys from six-years-old.

Entry into the stag run, suitable for people aged eight-years-old and above, costs £10 for adults and £5 for children, and must be pre-booked by visiting www.hagleyramblers.com. On the day entry will cost £5 extra per category.
