Stourbridge Chess Club

The annual post-season friendly Tony Evers match against Halesowen was held on July 24th at Halesowen. It was a fourteen board match. Stourbridge out graded their opponents on the higher boards but Halesowen looked better on the lower boards where Stourbridge fielded four less experienced juniors. In the end the final result was a 4½-9½ win for Stourbridge with Stourbridge’s top eight boards all winning. Even against lower rated opposition this is still a good consistent performance.

After 4 rounds of Stourbridge’s Summer tournament, Martin Berridge and John Foxall joint leaders on 3½ out of 4. John played an endgame accurately to win against Chris Cox and catch Martin Berridge who took a half point bye.

The final round of the Summer tournament will be held on 1st August.

Martin Berridge was selected to play for England ‘B’ in the recent ICCD 18th Deaf Chess Olympiad in Manchester.

The club will be holding a pre-season blitz tournament on August 22 open to club members and prospective members.. This will be followed by the Brian Dudley memorial blitz tournament on August 29 to which neighbouring clubs have also been invited.
