Midland Ancestors

July 17 gave us an evening to enjoy and look back on forty years of family and local history through the eyes of those associated with the Stourbridge Group.

St Peter’s Centre in Pedmore was the location for Midland Ancestors Stourbridge Group to host an invited audience to celebrate our fortieth anniversary. In attendance were Dudley’s mayor, Cllr Alan Taylor and mayoress wife Winifred, along with Society president Dr. Chris Leigh MD and executive officers. It was good to see that so many who had contributed much to the Group over the years, were present at this momentous occasion. After formal introductions, the mayor was shown around various exhibits from the Group’s past by long standing member, Jean Weston.

A grand buffet together with wine was eagerly consumed after which there was entertainment in the form of Marlene Watson, “The Black Country Wench”. Via the local vernacular, she recounted anecdotes and tales from the vicinity that had everyone in raptures. Afterwards Chris Leigh, as senior Society officer, toasted the mayor and the Stourbridge Group, the mayor responding with gracious words.

Prior to the event reaching its climax there was a raffle with numerous prizes, plus merchandise covering all aspects of family history research, plus of course convivial conversation. The centre-piece, an impressive cake, was cut by the mayor and distributed to all. As the evening drew to a close it was deemed a success by all who attended. Our thanks go to many people for their help and assistance in organising an evening that has been long in the planning.

Our Group is just one part of a larger organisation covering Staffordshire, Worcestershire and Warwickshire, with a library holding records centuries old. Family history is a subject that appeals to numerous folks and our monthly meetings at St Peter’s Centre Pedmore, offer a conduit for those having an interest. With a full programme of talks and visits for the coming year and beyond, we feel well equipped for the future. Details of all our activities can be found via www.stourbridgegroup@midanc.uk
