HUNDREDS of pounds have been raised in memory of a much-loved father-of-two who died after a tragic incident underneath a motorway bridge at Wychbold, near Bromsgrove.

Paul Edwards lost his life after he was hit by a lorry on the A38 which runs under the M5 on August 13.

Mr Edwards, from Stourbridge, who was in his 60s, suffered chest, pelvic and head injuries and was taken to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital but he died shortly afterwards.

He had reportedly been driving a grey VW van but he was hit by an Eddie Stobart HGV after getting out of the vehicle.

Mr Edwards leaves a wife Dawn and two sons Robert and Nathan, who have been left heartbroken following his tragic death.

Mitchell Bolton, Mr Edwards' nephew, described him as a "great uncle - loved by everyone".

Meanwhile - an online fundraising page has been set up in his memory, the proceeds of which will go to the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity and towards funeral costs.

Brother-in-law Alan Nicholls, who has set up the fundraising campaign which has already raised more than £760, said: "This dreadful event is beyond comprehension, and understandably the family are still in shock.

"I know they have already had numerous calls, texts and messages from people asking how they can help, so this campaign has been created as a way to keep everyone up-to-date with plans, and also offer a place for messages and donations to be left."

Anyone wishing to make a donation or to leave a message of condolence can go to https://gogetfunding.com/forpaul/.

Mr Nicholls told the Advertiser relatives have been left "devastated" by the tragedy and he added: "Paul was a loving family man, one of the most genuine people you could hope to meet. He was self-effacing but with a wicked sense of humour and a cheeky, mischievous smile.

"He was always generous with his time and money (even when he had none!) and he would always go the extra mile to help someone. This has left a huge hole in so many people's lives."

A man in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of murder shortly after the tragic incident which claimed Paul's life - and he has since been bailed pending further enquiries.

West Mercia Police believe there was an altercation on the southbound M5 carriageway, between junction 4a and junction 5, before the incident which happened just before 4.30pm - and they are continuing to appeal for witnesses or motorists who may have dash cam footage to come forward.

Anyone with information is urged to call West Mercia Police on 101 - quoting incident number 518s of August 13.

A funeral service for Mr Edwards will be held at 1pm on Friday September 21 at St Andrew's Church, Oakfield Road, Wollescote, Stourbridge.
