NEXT year will be the 100th anniversary of the 1st Ledbury Scouts and this momentous landmark will be made extra special by a town centre celebration.

Ledbury is to host the Malverns District St George’s Day parade, involving hundreds of scouts from around the local area.

Up to 500 scouts are expected for the parade and at a service in St Michael and All Angels Church.

Detailed organisation is already taking place to make the parade, on Sunday April 28, a great community success.

Ed Hogan, assistant group Scout Leader for the 1st Ledbury Scouts said: "The event will be the keynote St George’s Day parade for the area covering Ledbury, The Malverns, Upton, Bosbury, Cradley, Much Marcle and other villages with scout groups.

"The Lord Lieutenant for Herefordshire, Lady Darnley, will be taking the salute in the town centre."

Organisers have approached the John Masefield High School so that the car park can be used to facilitate the high number coaches and cars that will bring in all the scouts, and the school has agreed.

Mr Hogan said: "It is anticipated that there will be around ten coaches and fifty cars."

Organisers will need access to the car park from noon to 4pm.

Ledbury Town Council is being asked to have the toilets in Church Lane open for the event, also from noon to 4pm.

And town councillors will be asked to attend, including the chairman, Cllr Nina Shields.

Councillors will also be required to chaperone Lady Darnley on the day.

Ledbury Rotary Club has already confirmed that it will provide a small number of volunteer's to act as stewards for car parking and, if they are in place, for road closures.

Road closure information will be posted nearer the date.

Police are also being asked to have a visible presence on the day.
