WESTACRE Middle School pupils had the chance to help support rescue animals of all different shapes and sizes when making a trip to Danemere Animal Rescue centre in Tibberton.

The pupils were there to donate earnings from an enterprise challenge they held in the summer term.

In the project, year 7 pupils were challenged to upcycle waste to create sell-able products as part of their annual 'Blood, Sweat and T-shirts' enterprise challenge.

Building on the success of previous years, there were a full range of products from bags made from old clothing, wooden door signs made from recycled scrabble letters and lanterns made from old baked bean cans.

As part of the project, pupils were shown footage of other children around the world who are being forced into employment from an early age to help support their families.

The winning group was given the opportunity to select a charity to support.

Winners Revamped, made up of Rhianna Dunn, Chloe Hart, Emily Horton, Emma Jones and Laoni Ryback, chose Danemere.

The girls, who now attend Droitwich Spa High School, returned to their middle school and made the donation in person.

Phil Cotton, head of Year 7 at Westacre, accompanied the children to the rescue centre after welcoming the girls back to Westacre at the start of the new school year.

He said: "To generate such a wonderful idea of recycling egg shells into candles makes them deserved winners and I am exceptionally proud of the whole year group: they all showed exceptional team work and I'm sure we have some future Dragon's Den candidates for the future."

Laoni Ryback, a member of the winning group, said: "It's so nice to be able to do something good for someone else. Who would of thought a bunch of egg shells could have made such a difference to these animals?"

An additional donation has also been made to Oxfam which is the charity the project has supported for the previous five years.
