AN appeal for knitted poppies to mark the end of World War One is going strong.

This week, the 1,000th poppy was received at the Hive, where it is hoped 10,000 will ultimately be collected.

Keen knitters and crocheters across Worcestershire have been busy crafting the woollen flowers for the intended display to commemorate the end of the war.

The goal is to have one poppy for each of the service personnel who lost their lives in the conflict. Since the call went out, the poppies have been pouring in.

Laura Worsfold of the Hive said: "The response we have had so far from the public has been amazing. Every day I get to work to find more poppies waiting for me. We originally thought they would all be knitted but as time has gone on we've discovered more and more people are crocheting theirs which is great.

"We don’t have a set-in-stone design for the poppies and as such we have seen them coming in all shapes and sizes. This is exactly what we wanted, each person who lost their life in the war was an individual and so are the poppies that commemorate them."

One contributor, Verity Cox, said: "I was motivated to make the poppies following hearing the appeal on the radio a couple of weeks ago.

"I have knitted and crocheted since I was a child and this was one of many projects I have ongoing at this time "

There is still time to craft and send in poppies to be included in the display in November. People can drop the poppies off at the Hive itself or at their local libraries.
