CHRISTMAS came early to Worcester as over 200 runners turned out in force for the annual St. Richard’s Hospice Santa Dash.

People were invited to run, walk or jog the two mile route to raise funds for the hospice on Sunday, December 16.

Those taking part were given a free Santa suit and took on the challenging run starting at Worcestershire County Cricket Club, following the River Severn to Diglis and finishing at South Quay where hot chocolate, mulled wine and mince pies were provided.

Every runner was presented with a special medal to celebrate taking part.

A grand total of 231 people took part in the Santa Dash, raising more than £8,500 for the hospice, which provides vital care for patients suffering life-limiting illnesses.

Alison Parkes, St Richard’s Fundraiser, said: “We had a fantastic morning cheering on our splendid Santas and are absolutely thrilled to have raised so much to support our hospice care.

“It was wonderful to see everyone looking so jolly and we are so grateful to all those who took part and raised money.

“With their support, we can continue to provide our hospice care to patients who are living with life-limiting illnesses, alongside supporting their loved ones.

“On behalf of everyone here at the hospice – thank you!”

The event was organised by the hospice and was sponsored by Browns at the Quay.

It was supported by Worcestershire County Cricket Club, Worcester City Council, Youthcomm Radio and a host of volunteers.

St Richard’s Hospice was founded in 1984 in Droitwich and provides free specialist palliative and end of life care for patients living with life-limiting illnesses and supports their loved ones.

It is named after Sir Richard de la Wyche from Droitwich, who was made a saint in 1262.

Each year the hospice team supports more than 3,000 patients, family members and bereaved people in Worcestershire.

It also supports, Malvern, Droitwich, Pershore, Upton upon Severn, Broadway, Evesham and the surrounding areas.
