A NEW rooftop bar at an eatery in Worcester is set to open next week.

The Worcester News has previously reported on plans to open a new rooftop dining area, bar and dessert parlour at Hanbao in Sansome Street.

Work is close to completion on the expansion of the burger restaurant, which will retain its premises on Foregate Street and is linked to the rooftop bar by stairs.

The rooftop bar called ICYBAO includes a new more modern-looking grey facade with a living wall on one side of the building, covered in plants.

The plan for the restaurant was to transform the old Toby’s Tavern and construct a wooden gazebo on top of the single-storey building and erect a new roof to partially cover the terrace.

On Facebook, the restaurant’s management said that due to an issue with the new resin flooring, they had been been forced to delay the opening of the rooftop bar until Monday, May 27, when it will be open from midday.

On the day of the opening of the rooftop bar, there will be a rooftop terrace party from midday until 10pm, with music and a big screen showing the full edit of the renovation work.

The restaurant originally closed on May 13 to move into the new space, but because of the issues with the flooring, the date for re-opening was put back from May 20 to May 27.

At the time of the application first being submitted, architect Nick Carroll said: “The bar won’t be open-air, it will be tucked in the three-storey building.

“It’s very important to say that neighbours opposite will not be able to have a full view by virtue of the clever use of the pergola.

“We will probably plant it up with lots of leafy stuff.”

At the time of the planning application, it was hoped that the rooftop area on Sansome Street would be the first of its kind in Worcester, however in April 2018 the Conservatory in Friar Street opened its own rooftop bar.
