A REDDITCH event later this month hopes to bring people together to celebrate all that unites us.

The Great Get Together, a UK wide celebration, pulls communities together to share food, games and conversation.

Being held on Headless Cross Community Orchard on Saturday, June 22 (from 1pm to 3pm), the event will see picnics, games, and conversation.

Visitors are also encouraged to enter into the Midsummer's Day Hat Contest, being judged at 2.30pm.

With a prize of a Laura Ashley luxury afternoon tea for two, donated by Southcrest Manor Hotel.

Orchard volunteer Lee Jennings said: "We're delighted to host The Great Get Together on Headless Cross Community Orchard again this year. There's nothing better than people coming together to share food and a good chinwag. We're hoping to see a real mix of local people coming together to enjoy the orchard."

People are encouraged to bring a blanket or picnic chair, plus picnic food and cakes for sharing. There will be games suitable for all abilities.

Amongst other local groups taking part, the event is supported by the Royal British Legion and Sight Concern.

This year marks the third year of The Great Get Together weekend, inspired by Jo Cox MP, who was killed in June 2016.

The idea behind the event is to bring communities together and celebrate all that unites us.

This year's Great Get Together is held on what would have been Jo Cox's 45th Birthday.

Jo was a champion of humanitarian causes.

At Jo Cox's first speech to Parliament, she said 'We are far more united and have far more in common, than that which divides us'.
