THOUSANDS of pounds worth of flat screen televisions have been stolen in a burglary at Worcester Racecourse ground.

A spokesman for the Pitchcroft-based racecourse has called the crime "disappointing", and led to the decision not to replace them to prevent a repeat.

The door of an enclosure, used as a bar and restaurant on race days, was kicked in to gain entry overnight into the early hours of Monday morning, (August 12).

Padlocks to eight televisions, around 54 inches, that were fixed on walls were cut through with the screens then stolen.

The spokesman said nothing else of value was on the site at the time, and nothing else was taken in the burglary.

"It is a shame, we won't replace them now," the spokesman said.

"We are reviewing security at the course, but this is unusual - we can't remember anything like this happening before.

"We are just extremely disappointed."

The spokesman added that police investigating the crime had been out to them and taken fingerprints, in an effort to catch the thieves.

CAMRA’s Worcester, Beer, Cider and Perry Festival was staged at the site over the weekend, with the large tent dismantled on Monday after the break in happened.

A West Mercia Police spokesman has not confirmed if any arrests have so far been made in the days since the break in.

"At the moment enquires are ongoing into this incident," the spokesman said.

Anyone with any information is asked to call police on 101, quoting 0236S, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

The incident is the second time local sport venues has been hit by burglars.

In June last year two large flat screen televisions, worth £1,497, as well as cash from the tills worth £1,300 and a public address system costing £1,000 were stolen from Worcester Warriors' Sixways Stadium.
