A NEW council tax system being rolled out in Bromsgrove will make residents 'financially independent', say council chiefs.

The 'Open Portal' is a customer solution which provides a more interactive website for residents, conforming to government digital design standards.

Once customers have registered they can sign up for e-billing, changes to Direct Debit, see their statements and even upload documents.

Councillor Geoff Denaro, whose portfolio covers finance and enabling, said: “We want our residents to be financially independent and be in charge of their own income and outgoings.

“This will ensure that they do not fall into debt and can let us know when their circumstances change in case they need extra support.

“This is the first step towards our residents being able to communicate with us digitally in the future.”

The Portal will go live on Monday (August 19), and the council hope to roll it out to its benefits section soon.
