THIS year's Redditch Carnival is now just weeks away.

The much loved event, which this year sees it go back to its more traditional format including a huge town procession, is on Saturday, September 28.

The parade will be feature Caribbean dancers (and even dinosaurs) and starts from Edward Street car park at noon.

From there it heads to the bandstand where there will be live music and dance acts from a number of groups, as well as a bouncy castle, food stalls, and games and activities.

There will of course be Wilson’s Fun Fair, which has supported the carnival since the very beginning - believed to be 1926.

Something owner Tommy Wilson says he is particularly proud of.

Speaking to the Advertiser he said: "It's a great honour being involved in this incredible event.

"It will be great to see it back in its original format, complete with the parade which so many people remember and love. It will be fantastic for the town."

The prospect of bringing back the original Redditch Carnival became a reality after the formation of a carnival team last year.

A meeting was hosted by councillor Mike Rouse, in a volunteer capacity, at Redditch Town Hall after he said there was a lot of talk on Facebook about bringing the carnival back.

A committee was formed and one of the volunteers who stepped up was Amanda Haden.

She said "Like most people I have spoken to, some of my fondest childhood memories are of the carnival and not just the parade.

"The lead up to the old Redditch Carnival and the planning of floats was all people would talk about for weeks and months beforehand. It gave everyone in the community common ground and bought everyone together."

"Our community these days is far more diverse, it would be so great to bring it all together to share our cultures, hobbies, and interests and to highlight all the clubs, groups and businesses we have in our town."

She added: "We have a lot of exciting things planned and a wonderful Caribbean troupe coming in that Redditch has never seen before."

Wilson’s Fun Fair will be starting on Thursday, September 26 and is promising to be the biggest yet.
