STAFF and children are pleased after their school has received award.

Staff say they have been working hard over the last two years at Perry Wood Primary School to improve their arts curriculum, which has landed the school with the Gold Artsmark.

Suzanne Beston, head teacher, said: "I am so pleased that we have been recognised for such an amazing award. Here at Perry Wood we recognise every aspect of the school curriculum and give children many opportunities to explore and perform.

“Our children can demonstrate their talents and we give them the opportunity and time within the school day to do this. If you came to Perry Wood you will always see children being creative and hear children singing around the school."

The Artsmark award is the only creative quality standard for schools, accredited by Arts Council England. The programme aims to build children’s confidence and resilience through arts and cultural education.

The arts council wrote: “Your school has demonstrated a strong commitment to the Arts and an inspirational and effective mechanism for learning. This is most clearly evidenced through your plans to embed the Arts within and across the curriculum which as a feature of your most recent phase of development seems to have strongly utilised drama and role play as a mobiliser for children's engagement with learning skills and knowledge.

“You also report some exciting developments arising from the West Midlands Hub you are part of. You have worked collaboratively with local schools to provide Arts activities where pupils join with peers from local schools."
