WORCESTER City Council is set to spend, budget approval depending, an extra £60,000 on hiring more enforcement officers to police and hand out fines for its soon-to-be created public space protection order (PSPO).
PSPOs are put in place to try and stamp out several forms of anti-social behaviour, including and particularly pertinent to Worcester, feeding gulls, aggressively begging and cycling down the city's High Street.
These activities are not just minor irritants but are genuinely dangerous and in the case of feeding gulls, proving to be a frustrating and expensive endeavour for the city and the council.
Making the city as attractive as possible to visitors has been and will continue to be a huge priority for the council.
Spending money and using up time and effort to implement a PSPO will ultimately be a total waste of time if nobody is there to hand out fines and cull the behaviour.
Therefore it is completely the right move to hire more staff, otherwise the problems will just continue and get worse.
