IMPROVEMENT works in Kidderminster town centre, which will see the introduction of a new cycle lane, better steps and new seating and bus shelters, are on track to be completed next summer.

The scheme, which forms the second phase of improvements to Kidderminster town centre, includes opening the currently pedestrianised Worcester Street up to vehicles.

Since work started in October, a section of pavement by the Boars Head has seen new kerbs and tarmac laid and upgraded street lighting installed to house brighter LED bulbs. Work has also started on a new water drainage system.

Early next year, roads and footpaths from Marlborough Street to the high street will begin.

The project is being jointly funded by Worcestershire County and Wyre Forest District Councils, with further funds being sought from GBSLEP.

Councillor Ken Pollock, Worcestershire County Council's cabinet member for economy and infrastructure, said: "The works being carried in Worcester Street should encourage regeneration in the town and support economic growth by delivering better access into, and through, Kidderminster town centre for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.

"The works are also set improve the look of the area when complete."

When complete, the area will benefit from improved paving, a new cycle lane, replaced steps and planting areas along Worcester Road and Coventry Street, new seating and bus shelters and modern lighting.

Cllr Chris Rogers, Wyre Forest District Council's cabinet member for economic regeneration, said: "This is the second phase of the improvements to Kidderminster town centre following the £2m invested in partnership with the county council to improve Vicar Street, High Street and Exchange Street.

"The district council is committed to improving the town centre through works such as these, and through the regeneration of the Lion Fields sites as part of the transformation of the town centre offer, to support businesses and increase footfall.”

The county council is also planning to improve cycling routes to better connect Kidderminster town centre with the railway station.
