HALESOWEN rider and National Champion Simon Wyllie raced in Belgium at the weekend in two events both counting towards world rankings.
On Friday in the prestigious DVV series, Simon raced on the Koppenberg circuit which is a parcour known for its repeated ascent of the cobbled climb – one which has seen some of the greatest cyclists in the world dismount and walk.
Against the world’s best juniors he got to the front to get a clean line over the slippery cobbles. On a demanding day Simon finished in an excellent eighth place, gaining more ranking points to take him firmly into the world’s top 50, which will also benefit starting grid positions at the world championships in 2020.
On the Sunday he then raced in the Superprestige series on a muddy circuit at Ruddervoorde where only the best would survive such technical conditions. Simon duly delivered coming in 10th place and grabbing another ranking point.
Closer to home, Josh Field topped the podium in the West Midlands series with this week’s round held in Bromsgrove. Fellow Halesowen rider Tom Charles joined Josh on the podium taking third place.
