TIGHTHEAD prop Nick Schonert has missed out on a place in England’s 35-man training squad ahead of the Rugby World Cup.

The Worcester Warriors star featured in the first two camps this summer and hopes of further involvement would have been boosted when Kyle Sinckler suffered a hamstring injury.

But the Harlequins ace has returned to the national set-up and will fight for the number three jersey along with Harry Williams and Dan Cole.

Schonert will be disappointed not to make the cut but head coach Eddie Jones insists the “door is never closed” for those who missed out.

There was better news for ex-Warriors duo Jack Singleton and Ben Te’o who have both been retained in the squad that will begin training on Sunday.

Singleton who has signed for Saracens will look to challenge his new clubmate Jamie George and Exeter Chiefs’ Luke Cowan-Dickie for the hooker spot with former Worcester academy player Dylan Hartley not in the mix.

Singleton is one of four uncapped players in the group as he is joined by Gloucester scrum-half Willi Heinz, Bath back Ruaridh McConnochie and Northampton Saints forward Lewis Ludlam.

Harlequins loosehead prop Joe Marler has come back into the fray after coming out of international retirement for the World Cup.

While not named in the initial 35-man squad, Saracens pair George Kruis and Mako Vunipola as well as Exeter wing Jack Nowell will continue their rehabilitation in camp.

Jones said: “We can’t wait to have the full squad in place and to have players competing for those 31 places.

“It is a process of building the team up, building the cohesion, the tactical understanding of the team and our adaptability.

“We will need to get those things right to win the World Cup, and that is our aim.”

On his selection decisions, Jones added: “World Cup selection is a four-year process.

“We have looked at the squad carefully, tried to build up a squad that has enough experience, attitude and energy to be winners and I think we have that.

“In the process, we have left out some players who can feel unlucky.

“For those guys who have missed out, the door is never closed but they have just got to be ready, as you never know when the opportunity comes.”

England will play Wales on August 11 and Ireland on August 24 at Twickenham Stadium and Italy on September 6 in Newcastle as part of the Quilter Internationals as well as an away fixture against Wales on August 17 in Cardiff.
