FORMER Worcester Warriors scrum-half Charlie Mulchrone is poised to become academy transition coach at Harlequins.

The 30-year-old number nine has signed a new short-term deal that will see him provide cover for Argentina ace Martin Landajo during the Rugby World Cup in Japan.

But once the tournament is over Mulchrone’s playing contract will come to an end and will immediately join Quins’ coaching staff.

Mulchrone made 42 appearances for Warriors between 2014 and 2016 before signing for the London club.

He is set to work under Chim Gale who left Worcester to become academy manager at Quins this summer.

Head of rugby Paul Gustard said: “Charlie is a highly valued member of the squad and is well respected by all players and support staff alike with his consistent and competitive nature.

“We would like to thank him for his continued service to the club, his decision to stay with us and we look forward to his contribution during this important period on and off the field."

Mulchrone captained Championship side Rotherham Titans prior to joining Worcester and helping them gain promotion back to the Premiership in 2015.

“Looking beyond my playing extension I am very excited at the prospect of becoming the club’s academy transition coach and supporting our next group of Academy players as they embark on their professional careers,” Mulchrone said.

“I have been fortunate enough to have worked with some incredible coaches throughout my career and I hope to bring the positive elements from each of them as I transition to coaching myself.”
