DIRECTOR of rugby Alan Solomons hailed Worcester Warriors’ game management in atrocious weather to claim an “exceptional” 19-14 victory at Harlequins.

Rain lashed down at The Stoop but Solomons felt Warriors played the conditions superbly and showed “incredible” resilience to come back to win.

Converted tries from Alex Dombardt and James Chisholm gave Harlequins a 14-3 lead inside the opening 14 minutes.

But a 14-point haul from Jono Lance and a 67th minute try from Jamie Shillcock saw Warriors secure their second victory from their opening four Gallagher Premiership matches.

“To come here in this kind of weather and come back from 14-3 down early on in the first half to win that game was exceptional,” Solomons said.

“It was a question of field position and both sides realised that.

“It became absolutely imperative in these conditions and obviously errors were a major factor too.

“But I thought we played the game really well.

“We spoke about it all week and at the hotel before we came over. We knew the weather was coming in, so it was a question of fronting up, managing the game and handling the conditions which we did.”

Warriors failed to make the most of their opportunities in the opening period where they had 70 per cent possession and 74 per cent territory.

However Solomons thought Lance’s penalty on the stroke of half-time to close the gap to 14-9 was key to the away triumph.

“We had one long spell (in the first half) and came away with nothing,” Solomons said.

“The other two times we came away with penalties.

“The penalty that Jono got just before half-time was critical because then I felt we were back in that game. It was only a five-point difference.

“But the resilience of the players was incredible. It was a fantastic performance.

“It was very difficult to get tempo for either sides as the conditions were not great.

“Fortunately it wasn’t massively windy but the rain just teemed down the whole afternoon.”

Solomons was also pleased with the contribution of the bench, making his first three changes on the 55th minute.

“The conditions were such that fatigue wasn’t going to be a major factor,” Solomons said.

“But you are going to get it.

“It’s always difficult when it comes to making replacements but I thought we got it more or less right.

“I thought the whole team and the guys that came on all did splendidly.

“There was a lot put in by both sides.

“But I felt on balance that we deserved to come out on the right side of the scoresheet.

“It was not very comfortable (to watch) at the end. It was pretty nerve wracking, but we handled it 100 per cent correctly.”
