DIRECTOR of rugby Alan Solomons argued Warriors had warranted victory over Bath before calling for “resilience” in the wake of a third home loss on the bounce.

Worcester lost 22-21 despite a gritty first-half display in swirling wind and driving rain, coming back from conceding a try in the opening two minutes to lead 13-10 at the interval.

But early setbacks in the second half and another high penalty count turned the tide and although Nick David got over the line, missed kicks from Duncan Weir proved costly with Chris Pennell falling narrowly short with a penalty to salvage victory with the last action of the game.

“It was very, very tough, I thought the guys put in a good shift and did enough to win the game,” said Solomons.

“The penalties told against us, that was the difference in the game.

"You look at the two tries they scored at the start of the second half, one which led to a yellow card, and both were given away in the middle of the field.

“At the end of the game when they had a line out and then a scrum, there was a succession of penalties there.

“We got that penalty at the end but kicking conditions were very difficult because the wind was swirling like crazy.

“Shortly before that we had kicked to the line and endeavoured to maul and got nowhere.

“I think it was understandable that the players decided to have a shot at goal, even though it was a long-range shot. Pens (Pennell) has done that before on this ground from a similar position.”

Solomons added: “If I look back to Exeter, Wasps and this one, they are all games we should have won but that’s where you have to be resilient.

“If you keep at it, the wheel eventually turns. There is no question about that and that resilience is absolutely critical to us.

“There is no easy game in the Premiership, the margins are very fine and at the moment we are just falling the wrong side of those margins.

“If we keep at it, we will come through and fall the right side of the margin.”

According to ESPN, each side conceded 12 penalties in tough conditions and Solomons was keen to review the action before holding anyone to account.

“We have spoken about the breakdown, it is always a difficult area and before one is critical at all, I think I have to look at the footage and see on what basis the penalties were given,” he added.

“We just have to be disciplined. The breakdown is an area where the penalties can be given but in fairness to the players, I need to see whether those penalties were justified or not.”

In what proved to be a pivotal call from TMO David Rose, Graham Kitchener was sin-binned for hitting the ball, causing Will Chudley to lose control while driving for the line and Bath moved back in front moments later.

“It is difficult to say,” said Solomons when quizzed on the call.

“I would have to look at the footage to comment on any penalty given in this game, it would not be right for me to comment because I have not seen it clearly enough or studied it carefully.”
